The administrative center of the region is Chelyabinsk. The overall area of the region is 88.5 thous. km2. The region is the 2nd in the Urals federal district in terms of urbanization, urban population reaching 81.4%. The number of population, according to Federal Statistics Agency, totals 3.5 mln (2013). The density of population is 39.4 persons per km² (2013). The national majority of population in the region is Russians (83.8%), Tatars (5.4%), Bashkirs (4.8%), Ukrainians (1.5%) and others (4.5%).
Machine-building, metal work, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy produce 3/6 of overall industrial production in Chelyabinsk region. The region also has own chemical, textile and food industry.
